Sundance#1 Off and Online; Spot Power Noticed in Alberta; Toronto Breaker Explodes In Heat

Sundance#1 went offline from 11:54 to 16:42 yesterday…Spot Power, a web-based residential and small commercial retailer bumped Enmax last month as the lower cost fixed contract electricity provider in Alberta’s major urban centres. At 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour with a one-year contract, the privately owned boutique retailer trumps other offers Alberta residential customers can pick and is putting the heat on Enmax to offer more than a five-year plan at eight cents per kWh to its consumers…A fire at the Hydro One breaker broke out Monday at 4:40 p.m. causing a massive blackout in Toronto until evening. The transformer, which eventually exploded, caused 250,000 city residents in downtown Toronto and those on the west side to be without power for about four hours. The explosion was triggered by high demand for power with so many air conditioners at full blast since Toronto was in the middle of a 33 degree summer afternoon – the power demand as of 5 p.m. was 24,567 megawatts, which was over the predicted demand of 24,351 MW. The fire caused the loss of 920 megawatts of power, which could have provided electricity to one million homes. Among those affected by the power outage were Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, who were winding up their nine-day Canada visit. The blackout caused about 400,000 office workers to leave work and head for home as some residents feared a repeat of the 2003 blackout when Toronto’s capital city plunged into darkness and chaos. Residents took refuge from the sweltering temperatures in the city’s cooling centers after Toronto’s medical officer of health issued an extreme heat alert Monday – the humidex is forecast to hit 40 this week.
